Please share a memory of A. Genevieve to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
A. Genevieve (Jenny) Martin, 90, passed away peacefully at her home of 50 years on Sunday, November 13, 2016, in Lockport, NY, under the loving care of her daughter Ellen. She lived a beautiful life and died following a long illness, with the same grace, dignity and strength she exhibited every day. Her family, and all those lucky enough to know her, will miss her immensely. Jenny was born on October 24, 1926, in South Buffalo, the daughter of the late James and Agnes Rooney. Jenny was the youngest of five siblings – the late James, Eugene, Leo and Mary Pauline. She attended Mount Mercy Academy and received a degree in Home Economics from Buffalo State Teacher’s College in 1947. Jenny married her high school sweetheart, Dr. James V. “Bish” Martin, on June 24, 1950. In 1958 they moved to Lockport where they met and became lifelong friends with Dr. & Mrs. Nicholas Carosella, Dr. & Mrs. William Stein and Dr. & Mrs. Paul Buerger. In January 1971, Bish passed away, leaving Jenny to fulfill the dream of successfully raising their six children: Dr. Michael G. (Linda) of Pittsford, NY; Kathleen A. of Winthrop, MA; Ellen M. of Lockport; James P. (Denise) of New York City; Ann M. (James) Connelly of Annapolis, MD; and John F. (Mary) of Olcott. After the kids were grown, she worked at Lockport Dental Group for over 30 years. She knitted hundreds of beautiful afghan blankets as personal gifts, enjoyed cooking, baking, crossword puzzles, cryptograms, and travel, especially to California, Europe and annual trips to Florida with her daughters. Jenny was a longtime daily communicant at St. John’s the Baptist Church in Lockport and found great comfort in her faith. In addition to her children, she is survived by 11 grandchildren: James, Margaret, Claire, Ryan, Jack, Kyra, Ethan, Hayley, Alexandria, Andrew and Bridget, and many loving nieces and nephews. The family also would like to thank Pam Swearingen who lovingly cared for their mom in her final years. Jenny was beautiful inside and out. Though a bit shy, she was strong, funny, kind and smart. Her priority in life was her family and caring for those in need, providing “mercy” meals to the sick and relatives of deceased friends and family. So if you are reading this and want to emulate her, do something kind. Reach out to someone in your family or send flowers or a meal to someone who is alone.
