Obituary of Harley W. Carlton

Carlton, Harley W. of Lockport, NY, August 16, 2014. Born on July 23, 1924 in Bromide, OK, he was the son of Audie and Mary Kirkpatrick Carlton. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 until 1945 and reached the rank of First Sergeant. Overseas duty included France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Germany. He was awarded numerous citations including the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Theater Service Medal, EAME Theater Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and World War II Victory Medal. In November of 1945, Mr. Carlton moved to Niagara Falls where he met and married his late wife, Virginia Snyder Carlton. She passed away in 1998. In 1952, the Carltons moved to Lockport where Mr. Carlton served as Secretary, Treasurer and General Manager of Barton Oldsmobile Inc. for 22 years. Owner of Carlton Ford Inc. in Middleport from 1974 – 1980, he retired from the Town of Lockport as Tax Receiver in 1997. Mr. Carlton was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Past President of Lockport Lions Club, and life member of VFW, American Legion and Lockport Elks Lodge #41. Predeceased by his wife, Virginia Snyder Carlton; two children, Joann (Bill) Sammarco and Timothy (Merribeth) Carlton and two sisters, Lola (Emory) Lane and Lucille (Warren) Wood. Mr. Carlton is survived by two grandchildren, Timothy (Nicholl) Brewer and Katelynd (Robert Mix III) Brewer; six great grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary, Deseree, Dominik, Heyleigh and JR; siblings, Roley (late Opal) Carlton and Dovie (Thomas) Weast and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Friday 3:00 – 6:00 PM at LANGE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 186 East Ave., Lockport where funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lockport Lions Club or Elks Lodge #41. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.langefuneralhomeinc.com.
