Obituary of Stuart R. Brown

Brown, Stuart R. of Lockport, passed away on Wednesday June 25, 2008 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on July 9, 1922 in Lockport and lived in the general area all his life. He was the son of Arthur and Dorothy Gursling Brown. A veteran of WWII, he served in the Air Force and attained the rank of 1st. Lt. He served with the 5th Air Force 43rd Bomb Group as a pilot on B-24 (liberator) bombers and flew 35 missions. He was awarded the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with 6 battle stars. He also served in the Air Force Reserves for 10 years and was discharged in 1955. Married to Gwen J. Greenland on December 4, 1943, together they enjoyed collecting antiques and operated an antique business for 20 years. She passed away on May 7, 2003, just short of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. For 39 years, Mr. Brown worked at Harrison Radiator retiring in 1986 as an Industrial Engineer in the Process and Method Department. After his retirement, he became involved with HISTOP of the Senior Citizens Centre. a docent for the Niagara County Historical Museum and was a beloved volunteer at The Lockport Public Library until his death. He was president of the Lockport Coin and Stamp Club for 13 years, the American Philatelic Society and a member of the 43rd Bomb Group Assoc. He was an accomplished bibliophile and photographer. Mr. Brown may be recognized from his participation in the “Then and Now” series on local cable television. Husband of the late Gwen J. Brown, he is survived by his daughters, Jessamy K. Dunbar of Depew and Deborah D. Keel of Lancaster, his brother, Charles W. (Jean) Brown of Lockport, his five grandchildren, Joshua McDonald, Robin Block, Glenn Fraccia, Adam Fraccia and Claire Marie Cook, nine great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, 3 nephews and 1 niece. He was a valued friend of Melissa Dunlap, Dan Sherwood, Thelma Swan, Dan and Barbara Bostic, Doris Eaton, Margo Warren and Andrew Dunbar, Jr. Friends may call on Saturday 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Lange Funeral Home, Inc. 186 East Ave., where funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
