Obituary of Lucy Volland

Lucy M. Volland (nee Novo) of the Town of Tonawanda, a generous volunteer in several venues, passed away on her 93rd birthday, June 1. She served Food Shuttle of WNY, arranging for pick ups at grocery stores and restaurants to be distributed to food banks in the area. She volunteered at Roswell Park Cancer Institute for over thirty years up to the age of ninety-two. (Seehttps://www.roswellpark.org/cancertalk/201502/lucy’s-7-secrets-happy-healthy-life). Lucy was also active in The Ladies of Charity and numerous other ministries in her church. Her passion was gardening and flower arranging, and she won numerous top awards, acting as a National Master Flower Show Judge up to her death. She had written handbooks for new members and received the State Presidential Citation for Dedicated Service and Leadership in the National Council of State Garden Clubs, and served on the New York State Federated Garden Clubs Board of Directors as New York State Flower Show Credentials Chairman. She was also awarded the Erie Country Fair Endowment Fund Award, Creative Arts Department, for her work over 16 years at the Erie County Fair. Generous to the end, Lucy donated her body to the State University of New York Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Science. Lucy was the wife of the late Edward F. Volland, and loving mother of Dr. Lawrence E. (Judith) Volland, Phillip R. (Mauri Long) Volland, Paula A. (Carl N. Maranto) Colangelo, Mary C. (Margaret M. Thompson) Volland and Douglas M. (Janice) Volland. She was grandmother of Laura Kenneth, Geoffrey Volland, Michael, Corrie and Nina Colangelo and Lucy Volland, step-grandmother of Judd and Allison Foster, great grandmother of Alivia and Madelyn Volland and Emily and Gabriella Colangelo, and step-great grandmother of Tyler and Haleigh Foster. Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Mass on Saturday, June 4th, 2016 at the St. John Neuman Shrine at St. John the Baptist Church (1085 Englewood Ave., Tonawanda) at 2:00 PM. The family will be present at 1:00 PM to receive friends. Reception at Jovi’s Restaurant 2795 Delaware Avenue immediately follows mass and all are invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, www.sacredheartacademy.org.
