Obituary of Eugene L. Winter

Winter, Eugene A. of Pendleton, NY passed away at Beechwood Continuing Care, Getzville, NY, on January 24, 2009. Eugene was born in Pendleton on April 27, 1919 to the late Joseph and Adeline Witnauer Winter. He entered the army during World War II, assigned to Company G., leaving behind his expectant wife and two year old son. Eugene saw combat for 367 straight days and belonged to The Bloody Bucket Division of the 28th Infantry Division which fought the German army from Normandys hedgerows to the Battle of the Bulge and on to the heart of the Reich. He retired in 1977 after a twenty five year career with Texaco Inc, was a Pendleton Town Assessor in the 1970s, and for the last thirty two years enjoyed family and gardening. He was a past president of the Wendleville Fire Company, past president of the Good Shepherd Holy Name Society and managed a team for five years in the Babe Ruth Baseball League. Eugene lived for his family, Christ and country and was a great example of a dedicated husband, good father and cherished grandfather. Eugene is survived by his wife of sixty eight years, Roberta L. Hayward Winter, sons Ronald Winter, Pendleton and James (Mary Ann) Winter of Houston, TX. He was predeceased by his daughter Jeanine (Winter) Rocchio and his son Robert. He is also survived by his sister Marjorie Leising, Clarence, NY, and brothers Joseph Winter, Tonawanda, NY and Donald (Esther) Winter of Pendleton. He was predeceased by his sister Catherine Winter. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Friends are invited to call on Monday from 5:00 to 8:00PM at Lange Funeral Home, 186 East Avenue, Lockport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Good Shepherd R.C. Church, 5443 Tonawanda Creek Rd., North Tonawanda on Tuesday at 10:00AM. Interment to follow in Good Shepherd Cemetery.
