John Gregory Hamluk of Lockport, NY passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2020, with his loving family at his side. Born on November 17, 1933, in Port Jervis, NY, he was the son of the late Gregory Hamluk and Mary (Foriss) and Emerson Gilson. He graduated from Ellicottville High School and served in the US Army from 1959 – 1961. John did his basic training at Fort Dix and then was stationed at Fort Clayton in Panama where he served as a food inspector. From 1957 – 1964, John worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service, then as a service technician at Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors from 1964 – 2000, when he retired. He also helped his father-in-law operate his dairy farm. John was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church and a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid gardener, experimenting with many types of berries and vegetables – and was especially known for his strawberries and pumpkins. He taught his young grandchildren to dig in the dirt, plant seeds, and watch them grow. He enjoyed all sports, and he was an avid Penn State football, Syracuse basketball, Sabres, Bills, and NY Yankees fan. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Survived by his beloved wife, Elsbeth A. Hamluk (nee Bredefeld): loving children, Valerie, Gregory, Kevin, and Brian Hamluk: grandchildren, Aleksander, Natalya, and Nathaniel Hamluk: siblings, Steven (late Beverly) Gilson, Mary Ann (Donald) Clune and James (Kristyl) Gilson; brother-in-law, Ernest (Virginia) Bredefeld; aunt, Katie Sheldon, and several nieces and nephews.
