Obituary of David G. Hammond

Canandaigua - David G. Hammond, age 81, retired Undersheriff of Ontario County, died November 5, 2024, at F.F. Thompson Hospital.
David was born November 11, 1942, in Lockport, NY to George Frank Hammond and Winifred (Dale) Hammond. He graduated from Middleport High School and served in the United States Navy before attending SUNY Brockport, where he graduated with a B.A. in English and Secondary Education in 1967. He taught English at Geneva High School and worked part-time for the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department, before joining the Sheriff’s Department full-time in 1971. There, he served with distinction as a Deputy, Welfare Fraud Investigator, Lieutenant of both the Road Patrol and Criminal Investigation Division, and eventually, Undersheriff, a position from which he retired in 2002. Aside from the births of his two daughters, and his marriage to wife Karyl in 1982, one of his proudest accomplishments was his service as a Director and Instructor for the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy, where he imparted his skills as an administrator, teacher, and policeman to a new generation of law enforcement officers. In his spare time, he was an avid fisherman and boater, a voracious reader, a talented landscaper and builder of stonework’s, an unbeatable Scrabble player, and a gifted writer, poet, singer, and fledgling banjo player. David was a member of the Canandaigua Yacht Club and Clifton Springs Country Club.
He was predeceased by his parents and stepmother Jean Allen Hammond, and brother Paul F. Hammond.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Karyl (Lewis) Hammond; two daughters, Rayne Hammond-Benz (David Benz) and Summer (Jonathan) Trzeciak; four grandchildren, Zander Benz, Haven Benz, Eden Trzeciak and Troy Trzeciak, all of Clifton Springs; sister, Brenda (Arthur) Brauer of Lockport; brother, George Frank Hammond, Jr., of Medina; sister-in-law, Barbara Hammond of Florida; cousins, Joanne Hammond of Rochester and Patricia Bathrick of Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews.
His memorial service was held Monday, November 11, at 11:00am at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 320 South Pearl Street, Canandaigua. Interment in Addison Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research www.give.michaeljfox.org.
